Our Approach
EKO matches smart capital with people, projects, and companies that are poised to profit from emerging markets for ecosystem services, whether they be markets for carbon, for water quality, or for biodiversity (e.g. wetland mitigation, conservation banking). EKO will therefore:
- Invest in land with undeveloped or unrecognized environmental assets with a view to developing these assets and profiting from their sale in emerging environmental markets.
- Invest or co-invest in the development of credits destined for environmental markets derived from land-based assets (e.g. carbon credits from avoided deforestation projects in developing countries).
- Invest in companies that are poised to profit from these emerging markets (e.g. carbon project developers, mitigation bankers, etc.)
- Structure joint ventures and special purpose vehicles for investment in environmental assets, credits, or companies in the environmental market space.
- In some very limited occasions, provide advisory services to companies or investment organizations interested in better understanding and monetizing their ecological assets.
Green Financial Services
We call ourselves a "Merchant Bank for Environmental Markets" and like the merchant banks that emerged in the Middle Ages, we seek to stimulate the development of environmental markets by providing capital and market intelligence to the best projects and people in the field. Our focus is on "green" environmental assets (i.e. land-based carbon and forestry carbon rather than industrial emissions reductions, and wetland mitigation banking/conservation banking rather than pollution abatement technologies). While our vision is global, our initial areas of focus will be in the United States and in Latin America, where our team has particular expertise.
